British actor Paul Bettany and his wife, Jennifer Connelly, have put their nine-bedroom New York mansion on the market for more than £4 million - twice the price they paid for it five years ago, it was revealed.

The Da Vinci Code actor and his Oscar-winning wife will move from Brooklyn to a 7 million dollar (£3.5 million) 4,000 sq ft home in New York's West Village, which has views of the Hudson River to the west and up to midtown Manhattan.

The couple have put their Brooklyn house, which they bought in 2003 for a reported 3.7 million dollars (£1.9 million), up for sale for 8.5 million dollars (£4.25 million).

The Sotheby's listing for the turn-of-the-century home in Brooklyn's Prospect Park West describes it as one of the "all-time great houses of New York", with "Golden Age limestone".

The 36-year-old actor and Beautiful Mind actress Connelly, 37, will be leaving behind a nine-bedroom mansion complete with a wood-burning stove and a gated garden.

The listing adds: "This property is simply outstanding in every way."
