Two people are under arrest on suspicion of murder after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed to death, police said.

The youngster was rushed to hospital by ambulance after police found him suffering stab wounds at a house in the Thatto Heath area of St Helens, Merseyside, around 11.40pm on Saturday night.

Police, paramedics and doctors fought in vain to save his life but the boy died from his injuries shortly after arrival in hospital.

A 17-year-old boy and a 44-year-old woman, both from St Helens, were arrested at the scene and are now in custody, Merseyside Police said.

A weapon has been found, house to house inquiries are being carried out and the crime scene sealed off for a detailed forensic examination.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "Merseyside Police has this morning arrested a 17-year-old youth and a 44-year-old woman from St Helens following the death of a 15-year-old boy.

"Police were called to the scene in Thatto Heath at 11.40pm last night following reports of an altercation.

"A 15-year-old boy who appeared to be suffering from stab wounds was taken to hospital by ambulance.

"However despite the best efforts of the police officers, paramedics and hospital staff the boy died shortly afterwards of his injuries.

"The two people held at the scene are currently being held in police custody and will be interviewed by detectives later."
